Assignment #6
1. Define or describe each of the terms. (all computer related terms)
* broadband connection- An internet connection that offers higher bandwidth (DSL,CABLE), transmission speed.
* client/server model- For internet applications, client asks for information and server fields request and provides information requested.
* cookies- Small files deposited on a users hard disk by websites. Enables sites to remember what they know about visitors.
* DSL- Digital Subscriber Line. A type of broadband connection to internet.
* extranet- A private TCP/IP network designed for outside use to customers, clients, and business partners.
* FTP- File Transfer Protocol. Communication protocol that allows users to download files from remote servers to their computers and upload files they want to share.
* HTML- Hypertext Markup Language. Used to create web pages. A text file which includes code that describes the format, layout, and logical structure of a document.
* hyperlink- Word, phrase, picture, that acts as a button and enables users to explore the web or a multimedia document with a mouse click.
* java- Programming language created by Sun Microsystems.
* JavaScript- Web scripting language similar to, but unrelated to Java.
* newsgroup- An ongoing public discussion on a particular subject. Written to a central internet site such as usenet.
* packet switching- Technique used to send information over the internet.
* TCP/IP- Transmission Control Protocol/ Inertnet Protocol. Language of the internet. Allows cross network communications for almost every computer and network.
* URL- Uniform Resource Locator. Internet web address.
* World Wide Web- Part of the internet. Collection of multimedia documents created by organizations and users worldwide.
2. Why it is hard to determine how big the Internet is today? Give several reasons.
The internet is growing to fast to track with millions of new users connecting each year in the United States alone. Also, the internet is decentralized. There’s no internet central that keeps track of user
3. Why are TCP/IP protocols so important to the functioning of the Internet? What do they do?
They are important because they connect different types of networks and computer systems. They are the languages of the internet allowing cross-network communications for almost every type of computer and network. They define how information can be transferred between machines and how machines can be identified with unique addresses.
4. How does the type of Internet connection influence the things you can do on the Internet?
There are three basic types of connections: direct, dial-up through modems, and broadband through high-speed alternatives to modems. Direct allows you to take full advantages of Internet services without dialing in. Dial-up is a temporary connection to an internet host using a modem and telephone lines. Broadband have much higher bandwidth and can always be on. The internet is instantly available at any time at a much faster speed than dial-up.
5. Explain the relationship between the client/server model and the fact that different users might experience different interfaces while accessing the same data.
Used by most internet applications, client/server model, a client program asks for information, and a server program fields the request and provides the requested information. Users might experience different interfaces while accessing the same data depending on their internet connection. For example, a direct connection might use a web browser with a point and click interface to explore a particular server while a dial-up user might be typing with UNIX commands and seeing only text on the screen. Another might be viewing the same data with a few words at a time on the tiny screen of a handheld PDA or mobile phone.
6. What do email addresses and URL have in common?
URL just like an email address has the address of the host containing the resource; it uses the same domain-naming scheme used for email addresses.
7. Why is netiquette so important? Give some examples of netiquette.
Netiquette is important because it is like a set of rules or guidelines of acceptable behavior that if followed can make life on the Net easier for everybody. It’s hard to show emotions when you are communicating on the Net, the last thing you want is someone to take something the wrong way and make your life more difficult.
8. How might you use remote login while visiting another school? What about file transfer? How might the Web make remote login unnecessary?
Remote login enables users to on one system to access other host systems across the network.
9. Why is file compression important on the Internet?
Because, it saves storage space on disk and saves transmission time when files are transferred through networks. When files are downloaded to a PC they have to be decompressed before they can be used.
10. Why is the World Wide Web important as a publishing medium? In what ways is the Web different from any publishing medium that's ever existed before?
Because it can save time and money and make finding information much easier for many people. A web site can contain many elements all in one such as, tables, forms, animations, audio, video, 3-d , and frames.
11. Briefly describe several software tools that can be used to develop Web pages.
Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive, and Microsoft FrontPage work like page layout programs that desktop publishers use.
12. How does push technology differ from standard Web page delivery techniques? How is it used?
Push technology is technology in which information is delivered automatically to a client computer. The user subscribes to a service and the server delivers that information periodically and unobtrusively. Regular web page technique is the client has to pull the information on his/her own from the server.
13. What new services are available as a result of the commercialization of the Internet? What new problems are arising as a result of that commercialization?
Some new services include online catalog sales, auctions, reverse auctions, comparison shopping, and even financial services. Some problems that arise though are more and more congestion. Also many ethical issues arise. Computer addiction, freedom abuses, piracy and so on.
